EP 16 Fiona Lukeis – Reciprocity & Relationship

What we teach our Children with Fiona Lukeis [powerpress]

In episode 15 Beck Thompson, Author of Chasing Normal, shared her story about horrific childhood trauma and the love she longed for.

Love…it’s the foundation of life, creating bonds, a sense of safety, and security.

Love is crucial to build confidence, respect, self-worth, and fulfillment…there’s connection, belonging, and inner peace.

What our children experience can leave a legacy…positively or negatively.

The more people I speak with, the more I’m realising that trauma is a common thread in our search for love.

Fiona Lukeis felt a calling to teach people about love from an early age. Whilst she felt loved, the trauma of Vietnam left her father unable to process emotions calmly and she soon adopted the quick temper he modeled.

Seeking change in herself, it was the trauma of a violent relationship that became the catalyst for the life she lives now. Fiona believes all change begins with us for future generations to live without conflict.

EP 15 Beck Thompson – Trauma & Love

What we teach our Children with Beck Thompson [powerpress]

Last time on What We Teach Our Children – Leadership specialist Deb Rae talked about the importance of certainty and connection, both in developing healthy leadership and confident children. For those who experience trauma in childhood there can be no certainty or connection.

What do we value most as children attaching to a primary caregiver?

Love…it’s the foundation of life, creating bonds, a sense of safety, and security.

Love is crucial to build confidence, respect, self-worth, and fulfilment…there’s connection, belonging, and inner peace.

We can have all the material possessions, education, cultural experiences, and money in the world, but without love what does it mean?

Beck Thompson has spent most of her adult life repairing the trauma of her childhood.

A trauma many of us could not imagine. A strict, cold, and abusive father, ruled her early childhood home, dominating the one person who showed any love – her mother. That love was stripped from her by a cult like grandfather whose predatory abuse left her feeling abandoned and all alone aged 8.

Her memoir ‘Chasing Normal’ documents a harrowing childhood story and courageous path to make something of her life, inspiring others to find relationship and connection.

EP 14 Deb Rae – Connection & Certainty – Cultivating Leadership

What we teach our Children with Deb Rae [powerpress]

In the previous Episode – Entrepreneur Tim Niesler talked about how his exposure to business & finances through his parents, set him up for future success.

But it hasn’t been without a lot of self-development and learning from mentors and coaches. Skills that make him a better leader and Dad.

The business coaching industry is experiencing unprecedented growth – 33% from 2015 to 2023 (an average 6.7% per annum) and future growth projections for the multi-billion-dollar sector to 2032 are set to double at 13.9%.

Deb Rae entered the workforce as a university graduate with a Bachelor of Arts.

Since then, her studies in professional and community development provided opportunities in regional Queensland, Australia – that led to her own business as a consultant, coaching leaders and teams.

It’s important that we support children as future leaders to understand what’s required when navigating change. Change is a component of life and something many of us find challenging, but we can prepare ourselves for uncertainty and resist the fear.

For Deb working in psychological safety has provided a front row seat to what makes us human. Using her own personal experience, she explains how we can cultivate critical skills to continue adapting through periods of rapid change, where AI can never replace us.

EP 12 Mandy Jeppesen – Grit & Gratitude, Farmer and Agri Extension

What we teach our Children with Mandy Jeppsen [powerpress]

January 2025 heralded the release of the Australian Government’s first National Autism Strategy. The highly anticipated report lays out “a vision for a safe and inclusive society for all Autistic people in line with international human rights”, the goal: “to improve the quality of life for all Autistic people in a way that is meaningful to them.”

Lofty ambitions considering the vastness of the Autism Spectrum.

Understanding Autism is key to raising awareness and creating that safe and inclusive society, which means speaking to people living with Autism and caring for those who are affected. All of whom will tell you a different story unique to them…

Raised on a property in rural Australia, Mandy Jeppesen is ever grateful for the farming lifestyle, providing the building blocks of her values that continue to serve her through life’s challenges and rewards. She and her husband Tony continue to farm, whilst raising two boys on the spectrum.

Mandy credits her father for her hard work ethic and appreciation of nature. Qualities that formed the foundation of her grit and gratitude that she’s passed on to her children.

EP 11 Simon Mattsson – Curiosity & Life, Soil Health Consulting and Extension

What we teach our Children with Simon Mattsson [powerpress]

Our very existence relies on clean air, water, and healthy soil.

Why?

Because without these basic building blocks of life, nothing could live on this planet.

So, should we know more about earth’s ecosystems and cycles?

In the previous conversation with Principal Karen Argus (EP 10) about teaching children the skills necessary to grow and cook food, I learned this also activated curiosity in the natural world and links to food systems crucial for survival.

Curiosity is a vital component for critical thinking and the connection between nutrient density in our food and the health of the soil it grows in is widely researched.

Soil is also a key source of microorganisms that are important for gut health. These microorganisms help regulate health, hormones, mood, and memory.

To gain an understanding of the connection I spoke with soil health expert and regenerative farming advocate, Simon Mattsson.

In this episode he shares how the elements, minerals, and chemicals required to grow plants already exist in natural systems. Systems that we have inactivated through conventional farming with NPK, that can be re-activated by implementing rotational cropping and plant diversity.

Simon’s curiosity led him to an in-depth study of soil health, something he implemented on his former sugarcane farm and now shares with others as a soil health consultant.
