Trigger warning….
This episode contains conversations about mental health challenges in a child, including depression and self-harm, which may be distressing for some listeners. Please take care while listening.
In the 21st century I often find it difficult to understand why we continue to perpetuate traditional roles and expectations of men and women. For decades we’ve been calling for equality and equity, yet the same stigma associated with gender roles pervades. How do we break from tradition, from old patterns that don’t serve us?
After my conversation with Michael Ray in Episode 7 it became very clear that as a society, we remain stuck in a 1950’s mentality that’s supported by advertising and product marketing. Women are portrayed as the homemaker and caregiver, when in truth there are more and more men stepping into that role for a variety of reasons.
Former Aerospace executive Alex Egeler recognised that he and his wife were in way too deep working 50 hours a week, as their family grew. Sharing the care initially through parenting leave, Alex chose to leave his industry to create a business that allowed him to be the lead caretaker. It hasn’t been easy; however, stepping away has allowed Alex who’s now a Career & EQ Coach to get through some of the most difficult challenges.
