As a society, there is great weight in benchmarked developmental milestones, which are necessary to measure a child’s physical and cognitive abilities. Whilst we focus on raising disciplined humans with social graces and manners, spiritual guidance is often led by religious belief, which can stifle individual transformation (spiritual alchemy).
Sofia Geraghty grew up surrounded by old-fashioned patriarchal values, in England with Irish-Sicilian Catholic roots. As the only girl among brothers, she was surrounded by masculine energy and taught that men led the family, while women were expected to respect, conform, and remain “ladylike.”
It was these beginnings that ignited her strongly feminist views, views she has since re-evaluated as an adult.
Now 31, and Deputy Editor of Travel Weekly Australia, Sofia publishes Diary of a Human Resource, a newsletter exploring our relationship with work, tech, and culture where a recent opinion piece caught my attention, Sofia argued that masculinity itself isn’t the enemy, toxicity is. With the powerful title: “Without compassion masculinity destroys, without discipline it drifts,” she challenges us to rethink how we frame masculinity, not as something to reject, but something to rebalance.
From feminism to defending masculinity Sofia delivers a confronting truth and challenges us to rethink how we frame masculinity. Outlining the need for compassion and discipline in how we approach gender inequity.
